 A great tango... a brilliant new couple...

Tango “is a sad thought that’s being danced”, says Piazzolla. 

I am not quite sure if it’s true, but I believe that the power of this dance ensues from the game of attracting and turning away, of a centrifugal force, which is born between the couple and highlights the passion that brings them together. What I felt while shooting Katerina and Grigoris dancing tango at their wedding, was a real temptation for my camera lenses. The synchronization between them was extraordinary. I always say that the first dance of a couple is very important moment for the wedding photography - shooting, in order to capture, especially and above all, their feeling. 

What should you dance? But of course whatever embodies yourself and means something to you…
Me personally, I still remember our first dance, a Chopin waltz performed on a whispering piano…but what a piano it was! Today, I often put my four-year-old son to sleep with that piece, to make him dream while I’m narrating the last fairy story…

Το  tango  “είναι μια θλιμμένη σκέψη που χορεύεται ,”  λέει ο Piazzola.   Δεν ξέρω αν είναι ακριβώς έτσι, πάντως πιστεύω ότι η δύναμη αυτού του χορού  έχει να κάνει κυρίως με το παιχνίδι της έλξης και της απομάκρυνσης, μιας φυγόκεντρης δύναμης που δημιουργείται ανάμεσα στο ζευγάρι, και υπογραμμίζει το πάθος που το ενώνει. Φωτογραφίζοντας το tango της Κατερίνας και του Γρηγόρη στο γάμο τους, η αίσθηση αυτή ήταν ακριβώς η πρόκληση για το φωτογραφικό φακό. Υπήρξε ένας εξαιρετικός συντονισμός μεταξύ τους. Επιμένω πάντα ότι ο πρώτος χορός ενός ζευγαριού είναι ένα πολύ σημαντικό θέμα μέσα στην φωτογράφηση του γάμου  για να καταγράψεις κυρίως και πάνω από όλα το συναίσθημα του ζευγαριού.

Tι να χορέψετε? Μα φυσικά κάτι που να σας εκφράζει και να έχει μια ιδιαίτερη αξία για σας…
Προσωπικά  εξακολουθώ να θυμάμαι τον πρώτο μας χορό , ένα βαλς του Σοπέν με το πιάνο ίσα να ακούγεται…αλλά τι πιάνο! Ε, λοιπόν το κομμάτι αυτό το βάζω πια συχνά στον  τετράχρονο γιό μου για να ονειρεύεται τα βράδια καθώς του διηγούμαι πάντα το τελευταίο παραμύθι πριν κοιμηθεί ….

Bride, the star of the wedding shooting

I believe that the bride plays a central role at the wedding shooting. To me personally, the bride is my muse, the person who inspires me. Through her, I can approach the personal chemistry between the couple. We often discuss about ideas and tips which can highlight her look: hairstyle, make-up, accessories, ideas and little secrets that will make her feel comfortable at the day of the wedding shooting.

During the preparations of the wedding I prefer to photo shoot the bride discretely, while trying to underline the femininity and this special charm that every woman spreads at those particular moments. 

The glamour portraits of this series are spontaneous, natural and yet following carefully the emotional and psychological state of the bride during that day. As a photographer, I consider it my duty to help her decompress from the emotional burden, so that I can achieve a free and natural expression. Communication is the key-element for the success of a wedding shooting. My “brides”, as I usually call them, are women of strong personality, who wish to be special without betraying themselves. Their beauty, their internal strength and elegance have been a great source of inspiration for me. Through that article, I would like to thank them and confess that the biggest pleasure for me is when, after the wedding shooting, our professional acquaintance turns into friendship….  

 

Νύφη, η πρωταγωνίστρια της φωτογράφησης γάμου.

Στη φωτογράφηση ενός γάμου θεωρώ ότι το πρόσωπο της νύφης κατέχει έναν κεντρικό ρόλο. Για μένα προσωπικά η νύφη είναι η ¨μούσα” το πρόσωπο από το οποίο αντλώ έμπνευση, ενώ μέσα από αυτή προσεγγίζω και την ιδιαίτερη χημεία της σχέσης του ζευγαριού. Συχνά συζητάμε μαζί για ιδέες και tips που θα απογειώσουν την εμφάνιση της εκείνη την ημέρα, από την επιλογή του χτενίσματος, το make-up, αξεσουάρ, ιδέες και μικρά μυστικά που θα συμβάλλουν και στην άνεση της την ημέρα της φωτογράφησης του γάμου.

Στη φωτογράφηση της προετοιμασίας επιθυμώ να τη φωτογραφίζω με διακριτικότητα αλλά με στόχο να αναδειχθεί η θηλυκότητα και η ιδιαίτερη γοητεία που εκπέμπει μια γυναίκα αυτές τις τόσο ιδιαίτερες στιγμές.

Πρόκειται για μια σειρά glamour πορτρέτων που γίνονται χωρίς να είναι στημένα, με φυσικότητα και φροντίδα παρακολουθώντας στενά την ψυχική διάθεση της νύφης και τον ευαίσθητο ψυχισμό της εκείνη την ημέρα. Ως φωτογράφος θεωρώ ότι είναι κομμάτι της δουλειάς μου να αποσυμπιέζω την ψυχολογική φόρτιση για να έχω αβίαστη και φυσική έκφραση. Η επικοινωνία είναι πάντα σημαντικό κλειδί για την επιτυχία της φωτογραφίας γάμου. Οι ¨νύφες¨μου όπως συνηθίζω να τις αποκαλώ συνήθως είναι έντονες προσωπικότητες, που επιθυμούν να είναι ξεχωριστές χωρίς να προδίδουν τον εαυτό τους. Η ομορφιά τους, η εσωτερική τους δύναμη και η κομψότητα τους έχουν υπάρξει για μένα μοναδική πηγή έμπνευσης. Με αφορμή αυτό το άρθρο τις ευχαριστώ, και ομολογώ ότι η μεγαλύτερη μου ευχαρίστηση είναι όταν η επαγγελματική μας γνωριμία μετατρέπεται , μετά από τη φωτογράφηση του γάμου σε μια φιλία…

ΦΩΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΣΗ ΓΑΜΟΥ ΣΤΗ ΣΙΦΝΟ. 
Όταν έρχονται τα σύννεφα…
Το υπέροχο κομμάτι του Μάνου Χατζηδάκη από το Χαμόγελο της Τζοκόντας 

Μια φωτογράφιση γάμου στο πανέμορφο νησί της Σίφνου, στη μοναδική εκκλησία της Χρυσοπηγής, είναι μια πραγματική πρόκληση για το φωτογράφο. Και δεν ήταν η πρώτη φορά που βρέθηκα εκεί για να φωτογραφίσω έναν γάμο. 

Από νωρίς το μεσημέρι, στη σουίτα Αμφιτρίτη είμαι απόλυτα απορροφημένη με τη φωτογράφιση των πορτρέτων της νύφης. Είναι πανέμορφη αλλά και σκεπτική... Η σκιά με τα σύννεφα που γίνονται όλο και πιο σκούρα στον καλοκαιρινό ουρανό, προμηνύουν μια νεροποντή που κανείς δεν θέλει μια ώρα πριν από τον γάμο.  Το σχέδιο για τη διαδρομή της νύφης από τη θάλασσα ακυρώνεται. Eίμαστε όμως τυχεροί: Το ανοιχτό γαλάζιο κάνει θριαμβευτικά ξανά την εμφάνισή του στον ουρανό...Ο ήλιος εμφανίζεται και μαζί και τα χαμόγελα όλων μας!

Ήθελα ιδιαίτερα να αναπτύξω μέσα από τις εικόνες μου και την παράλληλη ιστορία του μοναδικού τοπίου που αγκάλιαζε αυτόν τον γάμο. Το παιχνίδι στα σύννεφα, τις εκπληκτικές διακυμάνσεις του τιρκουάζ και του μπλε, το φεγγάρι που χάιδευε με το γλυκό του φως το ζευγάρι, μέχρι να αρχίσει αργότερα ο χορός στην αυθεντικά νησιώτικη ταβέρνα του Λεμπέση.

Συχνά, συμβουλεύω τα ζευγάρια να επιλέγουν μια ώρα για τον γάμο τους, που θα τους επιτρέπει μετά την έξοδο από την εκκλησία να απολαμβάνουν το τελευταίο, γλυκό απογευματινό φως, λίγο πριν βραδιάσει. Το φως είναι μαγικό και αναδεικνύει τη φωτογράφηση του γάμου σας, αλλά και τον τρόπο που εσείς οι ίδιοι βιώνετε όλη την εμπειρία, αλλά και οι καλεσμένοι σας. 

Στη Σίφνο τα είχαμε όλα. Στιγμές γεμάτες ενθουσιασμό, συγκίνηση, δάκρυα χαράς, ομορφιά, άρωμα βασιλικού και μπουκαμβίλιας. Πολλούς καλεσμένους που ήρθαν από πολύ μακριά, Σικάγο, Νέα Υόρκη, και απόλαυσαν τα υπέροχα ελληνικά χρώματα και έναν γάμο με αυθεντικότητα και λιτή κομψότητα, μέχρι και την τελευταία λεπτομέρεια. Με ένα ζευγάρι ερωτευμένο. Στη συννεφιά και στην ξαστεριά. Τους το εύχομαι από καρδιάς. 
Και με τις φωτογραφίες μου για μια ολόκληρη ζωή.

When the clouds come…

The magnificent piece of Manos Hadjidakis from Gioconda’s Smile

 A wedding shooting on the gorgeous island of Sifnos, at the unique church of Chrysopigi, is a real challenge for the photographer.

Yet it was not the first time that I had the chance to shoot a wedding in that island.

Early at noon, in the suite called Amphitriti, I find myself fully focused in shooting the bride’s portraits. She’s ravishing but troubled… The shadow from the clouds which darken the summer sky portends a rainstorm that no one wishes for, just one hour before the wedding. The plan, according to which the bride would reach the church by sea, is being canceled. But luck was by our side: the light blue comes back brightly in the sky…Along with the sun the smiles on our faces shine all over again! 

Through my pictures I wanted to develop the parallel story of the fabulous landscape that embraced this wedding. From the play of the clouds, the amazing blue and turquoise tinges, the light of the moon softly cuddling the couple, till the dance in the traditional island tavern of Lembesis. 

I often advice the couples to choose the right hour for their wedding so as to have the chance to enjoy, when coming out of the church, the last, soft evening light, just before it gets dark. The light is magical and highlights not only your wedding shooting but also the way that both you and your guests experience the whole ritual.

In Sifnos we had it all: moments full of excitement, emotion, tears of joy, beauty, scent of basil and bougainvillea ˙ guests who travelled from far away - Chicago and New York – to enjoy the greek colors along with a wedding held with genuineness and unaffected elegance in every single detail. 

But above all, we had a couple in love under both cloudy and clear sky.

With my photos and from the depths of my heart I wish them to stay like that for the rest of their lives.
